Bogs

Bogs are very unique and very fragile environments. They occur in former glacial areas and are most commonly found in Northern Wisconsin.

Bogs contain high acid water levels and low oxygen levels, and their water temperatures are very cold. Because of this type of environment, animal fossils have been found in perfect condition. 

In order to survive such harsh environments, bog plants have special ways of coping. Some plants have wax on them to prevent extreme water loss while others eat bugs to get their nutrients. 

Bogs are really fun to explore, but since they are fragile places, we have to take care of them. 

Many bog locations have boardwalks over the bog to protect the plants. That way you can see the beauty and not harm any of the vegetation.
