Prickly Questions

How much do you know about porcupines?  You know they have pointy quills that they use as a defense mechanism, right?  Do you think they can throw those quills at their enemies?  You do?  Well, if you think that, you’re actually wrong.  Porcupines DON’T throw their quills, and that’s just one of the common misconceptions about this prickly creature.  Every year, select high school students from around Wisconsin take part in an independent study project at the Sandhill Wildlife Area, designed to learn all about the porcupine.  The group is mainly trying to find out what kind of damage, if any, porcupines cause to forests.  But they’re learning all kinds of interesting things along the way, such as that porcupines do a lot of den swapping.
