Watts Up?
There are some kids out there – kids like you and me – who are taking what they’ve learned about energy conservation out of the classroom, and using it to help their school become more energy efficient. Students from the Advanced Placement Environmental Science class at Reedsburg Area High School are investigating the way their school uses things like lighting, and heating and cooling. They’ve already found that the school can conserve energy by turning off a bank of lights in each classroom, and they encouraged their school to install motion-sensor lighting in the gym. The students are also testing the use of fans in the Commons area, in the hopes that the fans will push warm air down from the high ceiling to the students on the ground. And they’re also exploring the possibility of installing solar panels at their school. The kids say the things they’ve learned have also helped them to become more energy efficient at home. There are lots of ideas in the works for the future, and the students are definitely showing how the things they learn in class can be put to good use in the real world.
