Running On Empty

A new type of vehicle will soon be hitting our roadways – Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles, or PHEVs.  These vehicles use the same kind of technology as regular hybrid vehicles, but they include a larger battery that can be plugged into a regular household outlet to be recharged.  That means they can run on electricity for up to 30 miles before switching to the standard gas-electric engine.  As a result, these cars get great gas mileage – around 100 miles to the gallon on highways, and up to 150 mpg in the city!  And because the cars aren’t relying solely on gas, they emit only a third of the greenhouse gases that a normal vehicle does – great news for our environment!  PHEVs are just a prototype right now, but the major automakers are developing the technology and expect to roll out the first street models in the next couple of years.

“GAS SIPR” and “GD IDEA” are part of a national campaign called “Plug-In Partners,” which is designed to encourage the automakers’ development of PHEVs.
