Wind Farming

The wind has been used as a source of energy for centuries.  The first windmills were built back in 500 A.D. and were used to pump water and grind grain.  Then, in the late 1880s, windmills began to be used to make electricity.  And that’s when they started to be known as wind turbines.  Early windmills had many blades, but today’s wind turbines have just two or three blades.  And those blades are long!  The biggest wind turbines in the world stand 20 stories tall, and have blades longer than a football field!  The bigger the wind turbine, the more wind it reaches, meaning it can make more electricity.
