Dam Power

The water in rivers and streams can be used to make electricity.  It’s called hydroelectric power, or hydropower, and it’s a source of energy that’s been used for centuries.  More than 2,000 years ago, the Greeks used water wheels to grind grain.  In 1879, the world’s first hydroelectric power plant was built – at Niagara Falls.  But the United States’ first hydro plant was built in Wisconsin.  It opened on the Fox River near Appleton in 1882.  Hydro plants produce more electricity than any other renewable energy source.  In fact, about 16% of the world’s electricity comes from hydropower!
