Paper Mill Chemist
If you’ve ever wondered what a tree is made up, this is your chance to find out! A tree is made up of 3 parts – lignin, sugar and pulp. The lignin is used for dust control, cement, and animal feed pellets. Xylose sugar can be found in toothpaste, sugar-less chewing gum and candy.
Pulp is what paper is made from, and must be bleached to produce white paper for printing, painting and writing. All three elements are seperated chemically in a process called pulping (how ironic, huh?) A lot of water is also used to keep the paper mill running, somewhere around
6 million gallons!
Learn how they clean the water before it is fed back into the Flambeau River.
