Environmental Impact

When you stop to think about it, you don't usually even notice most power lines and poles. They just kind of blend into the landscape. Still, every pole in the ground disturbs the environment a little. Fortunately, when power transmission companies replace old poles, they can now use metal poles that can be spaced farther apart and carry more power. And the fewer the poles, the less impact on the environment. That's especially important in sensitive areas like wetlands. Take Turtle Creek in Southeast Wisconsin for example. Five poles used to run through the area surrounding the creek. But it only took 2 new metal poles to replace them. That means fewer disturbances to the wetland that fish, frogs and all kinds of birds call home. So next time you notice power lines stretching across the countryside, remember that there are people thinking about how to get power to your home and help the environment at the same time!
