Hatcheries

Another way fish populations are kept healthy in Wisconsin is through the work of fish hatcheries. The Lac du Flambeau fish hatchery was started in 1936 to help raise walleye and musky to stock in reservation lakes that are open for public fishing. First, fish eggs are harvested from fish taken in local lakes and hatched in incubator jars. Some of the fry that hatch are put back into area lakes. Others are raised and released when they reach a fingerling size. The program at Lac du Flambeau raises all the fish that are necessary for stocking the reservation waters. That's 260 lakes and 65 miles of creeks, rivers and streams! Since 1960 the hatchery has raised nearly 600 million walleye fry and two and a half million muskellunge.
