WHOOPNIG CRANES

Of the 15 species of cranes around the world, only two call North America home - the sandhill and the whooping crane. Unfortunately, whooping cranes are in real danger of becoming extinct. In fact, whoopers disappeared from Wisconsin by 1890. But in 1999, the International Crane Foundation and others began to reintroduce whooping cranes to our state. So far the program has been pretty successful. Wisconsin's whooping crane population is growing and a flock has been taught to migrate back and forth to Florida by ultra light planes!
