SANDHILLS

There are about thirteen thousand sandhills in Wisconsin. But back in the 1930's there were as few as 25 breeding pairs left in our state. Fortunately, farmers, conservationists, and all sorts of people who own land have worked hard to restore and protect the wetlands where cranes feed and raise their young. Plus, sandhills have learned to find waste grain in farm fields during the fall and spring. All of that has helped their numbers grow strong. To learn more about sandhills, go to:
