OLD WORLD FARMS

Did you know that Wisconsin was once known for producing wheat? The problem was that growing wheat year after year was hard on the land. So Wisconsin farmers had to try something else. One of the things the farmers figured out was that Wisconsin's natural land and water resources were good for raising livestock…especially dairy cows! So guess what? Wisconsin quickly became "America's Dairyland!"

Of course, dairy farming was quite different in the olden days. A great place to see how things were done is at Old World Wisconsin in Waukesha. The cows at Old World Wisconsin get milked twice a day by hand. And from the milk, the farmers are able to make other things too - like butter. It's a very cool place to visit if you get a chance.

Another fun place to explore Wisconsin's dairy past is The National Dairy Shrine in
Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.
