CWD
In case you don’t know, Chronic Wasting Disease—or CWD—was first
discovered in 1967 in mule deer in Colorado. The disease affects the central nervous
system and the brain of a deer, and a sick deer can pass it along to a healthy
deer. CWD is similar to the mad cow disease that infected cattle in Europe. But
unlike mad cow disease, there currently is no evidence that CWD can infect humans.
In 2002, the first three deer with
chronic wasting disease were found in Wisconsin. It’s a serious problem
because it can spread from the infected area to the whole state. Scientists are
doing everything they can to learn more about this disease and how it spreads.
