Amelia and Richard – Winter Survival

Winter’s a great time to get out and explore, but it’s also very important to remember some rules when you go outdoors (all the time but especially in winter). If you get lost, winter weather can be more dangerous than other times of the year, but if you follow these rules you should have no problem.

1. Try not to get lost. This sounds pretty easy and obvious, but it’s all about preparation. Know the trails you’re taking, be with someone who’s familiar with the area, and bring a good map and compass.

2. Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. It sure is a lot easier to look for someone who’s lost if you know where to look.

3. Bring a friend. Never go out hiking by yourself.

4. If you do get lost, head to an open area and STAY THERE. It’s a lot easier to find something that stays still than something that’s moving.

5. Stay warm. Zip up your coat and wear a hat to keep in body heat (you lose about 70% of your body heat out of the top of your head – so keep it covered!). If you do get lost, look for an area that is facing the sun, sheltered, and not too windy.

6. Stay off the cold or wet ground. If you need to sit gather some branches, leaves, or evergreen boughs to put underneath you. Sitting on the cold, wet ground draws heat away from your body.

These are really important rules, and it’s good to know them. Do some research and be prepared next time you go out.
