Ice Safety
Kites on Ice is an awesome festival held each winter in Madison on Lake Monona. It’s a great place to learn about a ton of fun stuff like flying huge kites and interesting sports like kite skiing.

Before you head out onto the ice this winter, keep these ice safety tips
in mind-

You need at least this many inches of ice to do these activities:
2 inches Walk safely
4 inches Play hockey, ice skate or ice fish
6 inches Ride a four-wheeler or snowmobile
12 inches Drive a car or truck onto the ice

1. Watch the depth of the ice.
2. Look at the ice’s color. If the ice is clear or white that means it is solid and safe to play on, but if it is black or shiny avoid the ice it may be too weak to be safe.
3. Have the right tools. An ICE CHISEL makes a great walking stick and a good tool to check for thin ice ahead of your steps. CLEATS on your boots help your feet grip the ice better to keep you from slipping, and in case you do fall through the ice, ICE PICKS are great to use to help you get back on top of the ice.
4. As always, adult supervision while on ice is a good idea.
5. If you’re kite ice skiing like Henry, be sure to wear a helmet.
