Hi, my name is Sierra.
I am 10-years-old (11 on June 15th) and love reading, painting, acting, dancing and singing. I played Amaryllis in The Music Man, a Munchkin in the Wizard of Oz, and I was in Florentine Opera’s Fidelio, the Nutcracker Ballet, and numerous other plays. I love to go camping and canoeing with her family. One of my favorite foods is dried apricots and I love to drink milk so much that my family wishes they had a cow in the backyard!
Q: What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting Into the Outdoors?
A: I can often be found with my nose in a good book. I even read by a flashlight under my covers when it is past my bedtime. Oops, now my parents will know! I also enjoy riding my bike, painting and performing in theatres – especially musicals.
Q: How do your friends and family feel about you being a host on Into the Outdoors?
A: My family and friends are very supportive and they’re excited that I’m doing it. They say it is a perfect fit for me because I absolutely love nature and learning about it. I’ve always been very inquisitive.
Q: What is the best part about being on Into the Outdoors? And the coolest thing you’ve ever gotten to do on a shoot?
A: The best part about being on Into the Outdoors is that you get to go to many new places and you get to discover many exciting things about our world. I mean, who would have thought that electricity could be made from cow manure?
Q: What did you learn about the shooting process of Into the Outdoors that you didn’t know before you did it the first… second… or third time?
A: I was amazed that it sometimes takes 6 to 8 hours of shooting to produce a 5 minute TV segment. But sometimes the videographer must shoot the same scene 4 or more times to get different angles that are edited together. Next time you watch, look for the different angles.
Q: What kind of music do you listen to? And do you listen to it between shots or locations on a shoot?
A: I like to listen to Broadway musicals, all types of Classical and Baroque, easy-listening instrumentals, as well as pop. So far I haven’t listened to any music on the set because I like to practice my script and make sure I’m prepared.
Q: What is a normal shoot for you like? Do you stay in a hotel the night before or after? Do you have to wear make-up or special clothes? Who decides these things? Do you hang out with the crew? I have so many questions I don’t know where to start… tell me everything?
A: We stay in a hotel before or after depending on how far away it is and what time the shoot takes place. One time I had to wake up at 5:30 in the morning. I may put on a little make-up, but pretty much we just look natural. We wear clothes that don’t have logos. The producer helps decide what clothing is right for the show. When we are in between takes, I read over the script to make sure I have it memorized. I’m very serious about doing my very best. We pretty much hang out with the crew because we are a team. Sometimes the shoot is long and you get tired. You have to make yourself seem energetic even if you are exhausted.
Q: Is it hard to make up school work when you have to miss class for an Into the Outdoors shoot? When do you make up the work? And, would your parents still let you be a part of the ITO cast if your grades started to go down?
A: My teachers and school have been awesome about letting me go on the shoots. I sometimes do homework in the car so I don’t get too far behind.
If my grades started to go down my parents probably would make me quit being a part of the ITO cast.
Q: Of all the Into the Outdoors episodes you’ve done, which one is your favorite? Why? Was the segment’s topic really interesting, or did you just have fun with the crew?
A: My favorite episode was the Cow Power segment where a dairy farmer turned cow manure into electricity and was able to power the entire farm plus 600 surrounding homes. That is a lot of power. I loved doing this segment because I’ve always been crazy about farms and animals and the smells never bother me. It was so cool because I got to feed a calf from a bottle. I can’t do that in the suburbs. Also, the photographer, sound technician and producer are always so nice and fun to be around.
Q: What is your favorite movie… and your favorite part, of course?
A: My favorite movies are Phantom of the Opera and Pirates of the Caribbean. My favorite part of Phantom of the Opera is when Christine sings “Think Of Me.” I love that song! My favorite part of Pirates of the Caribbean is when Jack Sparrow and Will Turner are fighting on a rolling water wheel that has come loose.
Q: If you could be ANYTHING in the world when you grow up, what would it be? What’s so cool about it… and have you always wanted to be one?
A: I want to be a missionary or an artist. I’ve wanted to do this since I was about 5-years-old. I want to go overseas and help people all over the world. I’d love to go to Paris and take art classes and see the Mona Lisa. That would be so cool.
